Frequently Asked Questions
When is National Black Cat Day in the US?
National Black Cat Day is celebrated on October 27th in the United States, and it'll fall on a Tuesday in 2026. It's perfectly timed right before Halloween to remind everyone that these cats are wonderful pets, not spooky symbols.
Why was National Black Cat Day created?
It was created to celebrate the beauty of black cats and to challenge the negative superstitions surrounding them. The day also aims to highlight that black cats are often the last to be adopted from shelters.
Are black cats really less likely to be adopted?
Sadly, yes. Studies and shelter statistics show that black cats (and dogs) often wait longer to find their forever homes compared to more brightly colored animals, a phenomenon known as "Black Dog Syndrome."
Is National Black Cat Day the same as Black Cat Appreciation Day?
They are two different days with the same great goal! National Black Cat Day is on October 27th, while Black Cat Appreciation Day is on August 17th. It just means we have two days to celebrate them!
Why are black cats considered unlucky?
This is an old superstition from the Middle Ages in Europe, where they were wrongly associated with witchcraft. Of course, it's just a myth! In many other cultures, like in Japan and Great Britain, black cats are actually seen as a sign of good luck.
How can I celebrate National Black Cat Day?
You can post a photo of a black cat on social media, donate to a local animal shelter, learn how to take better photos of black cats, or, if you're ready, adopt one!
Are black cats a specific breed?
No, "black cat" is not a breed. A solid black coat can appear in over 20 different cat breeds, including the popular Bombay, as well as in mixed-breed domestic shorthairs.
What is a Void cat?
"Void cat" is a popular and affectionate internet slang term for a black cat. It's a playful nod to how their solid black fur can make them look like a cute, cat-shaped hole or "void."
How can I take a good picture of my black cat?
It can be tricky! The key is good lighting. Natural light from a window is best. Avoid harsh flashes and try to have a lighter, contrasting background to make their features pop.
What are some popular names for black cats?
Classic names like Luna, Shadow, Salem, Midnight, and Onyx are very popular. Fun names like Toothless (from "How to Train Your Dragon") are also a big hit.
Is there a National Black Cat Day in the UK?
Yes, but it's on a different date. In the United Kingdom, National Black Cat Day is celebrated on October 27th, the same day as in the US, and was started by Cats Protection in 2011.
Are black cats friendlier than other cats?
A cat's personality is based on its individual temperament and upbringing, not its fur color. Many black cat owners will tell you their cats are incredibly sweet, playful, and affectionate.
What if I can't adopt a cat right now?
You can still help! Share posts from local shelters featuring black cats, donate food or supplies, or volunteer your time. Spreading awareness is a huge help.
Are there any health benefits associated with a black cat's fur?
Interestingly, the gene mutation that causes their fur to be black may also offer them some protection against certain diseases. Research suggests it might make them more resistant to illnesses like Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV).
